This past weekend at D23, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek announced quite a bit that was coming to the parks for the next several years. Disneyland is getting new lands – Pixar Pier and Marvel land (hinted at) – a new Pixar event, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge of course, and even Cars Land is getting a nice Halloween themed overlay for the holiday.

Disneyland Paris will be getting a new resort, Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel, and the Disney Cruise Line is getting  not just the two already announced new ships, but three new ships!  Plus, a brand new stage show based on the live-action Beauty and the Beast film.  But what’s coming to Walt Disney World?  Plenty of brand new things where we can break it down for you by category! Here’s everything that’s coming to the Walt Disney World Resort by 2021 and beyond!

Being that Walt Disney World is so big, transportation is a very important thing and a necessary item to have plenty of.  Up until now, WDW has had three means of transportation: bus, boat, and monorail.  And now we’re getting two more!  The first has already begun.

Minnie Vans

If you’ve ever felt the Disney buses take just a little too long for you to get around property, and just maybe you aren’t the biggest fan of Uber for one reason for another, Disney has an answer for you – Minnie Vans.

This new Disney-Uber style service will take you anywhere on Disney property for a nominal fee.  The best part is, the cars are themed after our favorite gal, Minnie Mouse.

Disney Skyliner

Gondolas are making a comeback! And pretty soon they’ll be back at Walt Disney World, but not as an attraction.  Guests will be able to hop on a gondola themed to one of our favorite Disney characters and travel from Disney’s Hollywood Studios to Epcot, hitting all of the resorts in between, including the brand new DVC resort just announced! No opening date has been announced.

Disney’s Riviera Resort

Disney is expanding their DVC list yet again with the newly announced Disney Riviera Resort.  This new resort will be located next to Caribbean Beach Resort, but be its own entity.  It will hold approximately 300 units and have a rooftop restaurant with views for both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot fireworks!  The new resort will open in the fall of 2019.

Fully Immersive Star Wars Themed Resort

This goes to show that even the craziest rumors can come true.  Bob Chapek confirmed Disney is currently developing a fully immersive all-inclusive luxury “starship” resort themed to Star Wars.  Early reports say it’ll be a 2 night experience and cost up to $1000 per person.  You’ll definitely want to see the details right here.  Since we were only told the resort is being developed, the time frame could be anything, but I would imagine it’s not too far behind Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Outer Space Themed Restaurant

Because Epcot doesn’t have enough amazing restaurants, they’re getting a brand new one, only this time it’ll be in outer space!  This brand new outer space themed restaurant, which will be located adjacent do Mission: SPACE, will allow guests to dine while gazing at the stars while up in orbit above the Earth.  No name or opening date has been announced, but here’s to hoping for a fun, gastronomy style menu!

Broadway Style Theater at Magic Kingdom

The Magic Kingdom is expanding it’s entertainment!  We’re finally getting a large, Broadway style theater which will be able to host large show productions most likely based on Disney movies not unlike Frozen currently playing at Disney California Adventure and Aladdin before that.  The new theater will be located on Main Street, U.S.A.  No opening date has been announced, though I would expect it by the 50th anniversary.

Tron Lightycycle Coaster

We all knew it was coming, and now it’s confirmed.  The Tron Lightcycle coaster is coming to the Tomorrowland!  It’ll be located to the left of Space Mountain behind the Tomorrowland Speedway.  The new attraction will be open by 2021 in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway replacing The Great Movie Ride

It’ll be sad to see it go, but The Great Movie Ride has lived a good life at Hollywood Studios.  Replacing it will be a first of a kind attraction featuring Mickey Mouse himself! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be a brand new E-Ticket attraction showcasing a new “2 1/2 D” technology.  No glasses required! You can learn all about the new attraction here.  It is planned to open in 2021 for the 50th anniversary, and to make that deadline, The Great Movie Ride will be closing August 13, 2017.

Toy Story Land Will Open Next Summer

Bob Chapek confirmed Toy Story Land, located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, will be opening next summer.  When specifically, he did not say.  But the land is coming along nicely.  At this point, it’ll really come down to how fast they can finish the theming for the entire area.  I would imagine they’re hoping for a May opening. Learn more about the new land here.

Star Wars Land has an official name and will open late 2019

Star Wars land is officially named Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!  And while Disneyland’s was announced to be opening first, ours will be opening late 2019.  There are many details about this new immersive land coming to Hollywood Studios, including both major attractions.  So be sure to read all about them here.

New Upgrade and Adventure for Mission: SPACE

Along with getting a new space-themed restaurant next to Mission: SPACE, the attraction itself is currently getting some much need TLC and will return with new updates!  First, the Orange side will be returning with a much needed update to its video.  The ride itself will not be changing and will remain as the Mars Mission.  On the Green side, this ride experience will now be a space orbit around Earth.  It will be family-friendly, allowing younger children to ride.  Some much needed changes to this stale attraction, if you ask me.  Mission: SPACE reopens later this year.

Ratatouille Attraction Coming to France Pavilion

It’s finally happening!  The Ratatouille attraction is coming to the France Pavilion.  This fast paced, 3D, trackless ride system will be a perfect addition to Epcot.  In it, guests will be able to shrink to Remy’s size and scurry to safety in a dazzling 4-D chase across a kitchen with the sights, sounds and smells of Gusteau’s legendary Parisian restaurant.  It will open in 2021 for the 50th anniversary.

Guardians of the Galaxy Attraction Coming to Future World

And finally, probably the most surprising to people (and most controversial), the Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to Future World in Epcot with an all new attraction.  Not much is known yet, other than a rumored roller coaster style attraction. As it says in the announcement, it will be based “on the rockin’ and action-packed world of Guardians of the Galaxy.”  You can find out all the details and how it’ll fit in Epcot here. It will be replacing Ellen’s Universe of Energy, which will be closing August 13, 2017.  The Guardians ride is planning to open in time for the 50th anniversary in 2021.

Well that’s about it for Walt Disney World.  It’s a great list of upcoming attractions and additions for the resort.  As they say in Tomorrowland, it’s a great big beautiful tomorrow!  As for what else is to come, well it does seem like this is only the beginning of many more changes to come.  After all, the 50th anniversary is coming up for Walt Disney World and the Magic Kingdom.  And there’s still rumors floating around of new changes for the park, such as the Wreck-It Ralph attraction replacing Stitch.

Plus, Bob Chapek teased even more to come for Epcot with plans to make Epcot “more timeless, more relevant, more family, more Disney.”  He teased this is just a bit of what’s to come.  Other rumors floating around which weren’t announced this past weekend include a Brazil Pavilion, Coco overlay to the Mexico boat ride, a new attraction based on BRAVE in the UK Pavilion, and even a full replacement of the Imagination Pavilion with a major attraction based on Inside Out! So time will tell what will be coming to Epcot, but its quite clear it’s the next park to get a major overhaul and soon!
