Warner Bros. and Pottermore just surprised fans of the magical world of Harry Potter with the announcement of Jude Law as Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. Previously portrayed by Sir Richard Harris, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets, and Sir Michael Gambon, in the rest of the Harry Potter series, Law will be portraying a Dumbledore fifty to sixty years younger than the previous actors.
With the revelation of Gellert Grindelwald being involved with the “Fantastic Beasts” series, and the ultimate revelation of Johnny Depp as the mysterious villain, many have speculated that the series is headed towards the final showdown mentioned in Dumbledore’s chocolate frog card.
While many were hoping Gambon might return to the role, or that Jared Harris (son of the original Dumbledore and the co-star of Law in the second installment of Guy Ritchie’s take on Sherlock Holmes), could pick up where his father had left off, Law’s casting has been relatively well received by the fan community. And with a star of Law’s caliber, many expect JK Rowling to shift the focus from Newt Scamander over to the struggle between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, with plenty of hints already laid out in the first movie.
The most mysterious of these hints is the existence of the Obscurus and Grindelwald’s pursuit and attempt to control him. Many have speculated that Grindelwald had his first encounter with an Obscurus in the form of Dumbledore’s younger sister Ariana, whose brief descriptions in the final book of the Harry Potter series almost exactly matches how Scamander describes them in the film – a witch or wizard who tries to suppress their magic, which explodes out of them violently.
Grindelwald’s search for power, mixed in with the references to Dumbledore and his relationship to Scamander, set up the future installments of Fantastic Beast as a globetrotting adventure, offering audiences a chance to glance the wizarding world in action, outside of the little corners we found of it in the Harry Potter series.
Filming for the yet to be named Fantastic Beasts sequel is scheduled to begin this August and set to be released in theaters November 16, 2018. So what do you think fellow Harry Potter fans? Are you excited to see Jude Law cast as Albus Dumbledore, or were you hoping for another casting choice?
